Until recently, anyone wanting to live and work in Costa Rica for extended periods of time had to enter on a 90-day tourist visa, requiring them to prove that they had a flight out of the country booked. This led to many people conducting border runs every 90 days, crossing into neighboring countries and then returning to Costa Rica.

The new digital nomad visa allows non-Costa Ricans to work in the country for one year with the option to renew, and sponsor qualified family members. The visa also exempts digital nomads from income tax.

To qualify for the Costa Rica digital nomad visa requirements, applicants need to have a valid passport, bank statements showing an average of $3,000 or more in monthly income (for a single person) or $4000 per month for a family, and health insurance. The visa is available to citizens of all nationalities.
In addition to these required documents, digital nomads must submit a letter from their employer or other proof of employment. The letters must be on the company’s letterhead and dated within the last six months. They must also include the name of the employee and their job title.
The Costa Rica digital nomad visa can be applied for online or in person after booking an appointment at the DGME’s web-based Appointments Portal. The process is simple and requires only a few minutes. Applicants can check the status of their application after eight days, but only when they’ve provided all of the necessary elements.
